Our approach to sustainability

We’re serious about making a positive impact

Our purpose is to help people realise their ambitions. Because we care about the goals of the local and wider communities we’re a part of, we want to make a real difference by working together with them, and operating in a way that’s consistent and aligned with our purpose and value, of understanding.

Our latest Sustainability report details the decisions, actions and commitments we’ve made to ensure we live out our purpose. Through embedding these into our firm’s strategic framework, we deliver genuine social impact through our sustainability strategy, which focuses on: EDI, education, people and development; Wellbeing; The natural world; Community care; and Quality and transparency.

The firm’s Sustainability Committee, which reports directly to the firm’s Senior Leadership Team, oversees and governs our sustainability strategy.

EDI, education, people and development

We seek and implement ways to recruit, support and empower people from all backgrounds to strengthen the diversity of perspectives we can offer our clients and help ensure all our people can thrive.

From advancing our hiring practices with bias reduction and structured scoring, to interview training and manager coaching, we understand that building a culture where equity and inclusion are at the heart of all we do requires continual action and informed change.

We’re delighted to rank in the Social Mobility Index and be a Top 100 Apprenticeship employer, as well as a We Show the Salary employer, demonstrating our commitment to pay transparency on all job listings to support fairness and drive equity. You can find out more about our ED&I, education, people and development initiatives in our Sustainability report.

Wellbeing

Understanding the fundamental human need for positive wellbeing, our commitment to supporting our people’s wellbeing is centred in six core wellbeing pillars – physical, mental, social, emotional, financial and environmental.

Our Wellbeing Committee, supported by a diverse team of Champions, is passionate about normalising wellbeing conversations; providing practical, accessible resources to support wellness; and ensuring that consideration is given to people’s wellbeing at every opportunity as part of our day-to-day life and activities.

From developing a wellbeing hub, to upskilling our Wellbeing Champions with suicide intervention training and regular Mental Health First Aider training, we’re encouraged to continually move the dial from wellbeing activity to embedded wellbeing practice.

You can find out more about our Wellbeing initiatives in our Sustainability report.

The natural world

Valuing people and projects that promote positive change for the future is a core part of who we are at Moore Kingston Smith. As such, we’re committed to a strategy that positively impacts the communities we serve while integrating sustainable practices into everything we do.

Our Natural World Committee drives the firm’s environmental agenda, researching and implementing initiatives to minimise material and energy consumption, and consciously reduce our carbon footprint. The team collaborates with global organisations, including the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), to move towards more sustainable operations, reflecting our dedication to long-term responsibility.

Acknowledging the environmental costs of operating our business, we’re committed to taking actions that further improve our understanding, enhance wider engagement across the firm, and equip our people to make thoughtful decisions and take responsible actions to help protect our natural world and ensure a sustainable future. You can find out more about our progress in our Sustainability report.

Community care

Belief in people’s potential to make a positive impact is central to our identity as a firm, and it’s reflected in the long-standing commitment we’ve made to engaging with charitable projects and community initiatives over many years.

We founded the Moore Kingston Smith Community Foundation in 2021: it’s our ring-fenced registered charity that supports the initiatives we carry out as a firm and individually. Through this, we’re delighted to match-fund our people’s own charitable fundraising and donations, support our multiple firmwide fundraising initiatives, and make significant contributions to our Charity Partner, which is nominated and selected by our people every few years.

We’re also delighted to offer all our colleagues a day’s leave per year for volunteering, either for a personal charitable project or for a team-organised event. Supporting our communities, and helping our people support theirs, is in our DNA, and it’s wonderful to see the varied projects and initiatives our people choose to support with their time and skills. You can find out more about our charitable activities in the Foundation’s Trustees’ Report.

Quality and transparency

Underpinning everything we do, quality and excellence are fundamental to our approach. We’re committed to maintaining our culture of accountability, honesty and integrity – to ensure the highest standards of ethics.

Prioritising Audit Quality, the application of Ethical Standards and the ICAEW’s Code of Ethics, our Technical Committee sets the appropriate policies and procedures to ensure high quality audits and client reviews take place and are aligned to ISQM 1 and 2.

Our regular investment in continually enhancing our internal quality controls and risk management processes, coupled with our continued investment in people, processes and technology, help ensure robust governance in today’s fast-evolving professional landscape.
