Coffee makes the world go round

According to a recent study, workers with access to coffee were more productive than those who didn’t have access, potentially costing the UK economy huge amounts of money. Employees who are happy at work are 20% more productive than those who are unhappy.

While the happy worker statistic is not surprising, the difference a cup of coffee could make is food (or drink) for thought. What this demonstrates is it is often the little things that make a difference.

For most of us, we spend a vast amount of time at work and large parts of our day are at a desk in front of a screen. Making sure the environment is bright, clean and fit for purpose is as essential as making sure the IT system works.

A comfortable chair, clean kitchen and break out facilities and access to refreshments make a big difference to how an employee feels about the company and their role and ultimately how well they will perform and if they will stay. Some high profile organisations have taken this much further; pool tables, slides and office bars are novel ways of keeping the workers happy but of course, this is not practical for most and not something, employees will expect.

Thinking about your working environment should be more than ensuring compliance with health & safety guidelines but should be an active part of the employee experience and employer brand. Remember next time the coffee machine breaks down to get it fixed pronto, you’re productivity might be suffering!
