Update from Cannes Film Festival 2025

12 June 2025 / Insight posted in Videos

Esther Carder, Head of Media, and Gurvir Cheema, TV & Film Partner, recently sat down for a short Q&A to reflect on Gurvir’s visit with the wider Moore Kingston Smith media team to the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. Gurvir shared his key takeaways from the event, while offering a unique perspective on what it’s like to attend Cannes as an accountant. From meeting up with his clients, to networking and attending panel discussions and screenings, Gurvir highlighted some of the standout moments from the trip – including his favourite memory!

Reflecting on the event itself and comparing to previous years, Gurvir noted that 2025 felt like one of the better years for the festival – with the return of a much-needed buzz, with many UK and international producers in attendance.

Representing Moore Kingston Smith, Gurvir joined global financiers and producers to share his expertise on the UK creative tax reliefs, and in particular, the newly introduced Independent Film Tax Credit (IFTC). The IFTC was a key theme during the event, showing positive momentum to the independent film sector, particularly in terms of helping independent producers secure funding for their projects – an area which has seen some struggles due to rising costs of productions in the UK.

Despite this progress, Gurvir also touched on the on-going challenges that the industry continues to face – from rising production costs to the need for clarity and consistency in applying tax incentives across different project types.
