Is someone not making the tea round your #1 pet peeve at work?

There are all kinds of irritations we might experience at work and many of them are caused, or at least aggravated, by our colleagues, but what can we do about it?

From whistling or pen tapping, to eating smelly food or simply not taking their fair share of the tea round, it is the seemingly small things that can really irritate. The list of work place irritants in a recent survey included such wide ranging issues as smelly food, whining, being untidy and procrastinating about getting the job done, but the number one issue was, perhaps unsurprisingly…always being late!

So, if standards have slipped, or were never really set in the first place, it might be causing issues in your workplace. While such issues might not be a reason for someone to leave their job these little things can build together to make work that little bit less enjoyable and encourage people to think about looking elsewhere.

But how will you know if there is any issue? Having regular 1-2-1 meetings with your team is a great idea to make sure they are happy and content and that they also understand your expectations of them. They are also a good opportunity to raise potentially annoying but non-work critical concerns like someone tapping away on their phone all day at their desk; something you might not have noticed if you are not always there! Once you know about the issue you can tackle it in the most appropriate way for your business.

A great way to set and establish standards within a business is to have an employee handbook which is an opportunity to set out the expectations, standards and requirements of the Company. You can also use this as a great PR tool to communicate the culture that you want to nurture.

Thought of in this way, you can be prescriptive as and when you need to be but also encourage feedback whilst promoting all the great things you have which make your company a great place to work!
