The importance of an induction plan

Do you have a formal or informal induction plan in place? Or do you just show the new starter round the office, get them set up with IT and leave them to get on with it?

An effective induction is important in influencing how an employee feels about the company during the early stages of their employment. It could also determine their commitment to the business moving forward.

With an effective induction plan and after three months in a role, an employee should know more about the business and what is expected of them than they did at interview.  They should have met and spoken to most of the relevant key personnel within the business. And they should feel a valued part of the team and fully committed to doing what is needed to succeed in their role.

What are the possible negative effects of not giving an effective induction? The new starter may not be as productive as they should be due to a lack of information and training. They might start looking for another job elsewhere, probably having a short notice period. They may not be performing as expected, resulting in a possible extension or failure of their probation period.

If an ineffective induction results in an employee leaving, this could potentially cost the business dearly. This could be extra time and money to recruit a replacement. Additionally, having to train someone new could disrupt your business’s day-to-day operation, even demotivating existing staff having to go through the process all over again.
