Top tax tips of the week (to be taken with a sense of humour)
Without any sense of irony, HMRC published their Top Five Tax Tips for completing your Self Assessment return… on Saturday 31 January. The first (and presumably most important) tip was: ‘Get started – don’t leave it to the last minute and don’t miss the deadline’.
Andrew Shaw, Head of Personal Tax, says: “Perhaps HMRC should heed their own advice when it comes to not leaving things too late! That’s not to say their intention wasn’t worthy, but taxpayers who need guidance such as “don’t forget to press the submit button” (tip 3) are probably beyond help.
“Tip number five invites people who are struggling to complete their tax return on 31 January to follow HMRC on Twitter… probably not the best use of time with less than 24 hours to go before the deadline,” Andrew muses.
